9 to 12 Month Cognitive Milestones
Understands meaning of “no” (9-10 months)
- Understands family members, pet names, and/or general object names
- Begins to use objects in the right way (ex: brush,phone)
- Shared intention: points to things they want you to see
- Learns other ways of communication (ex: point, wave)
9 to 12 Month Social/Emotional Milestones
Extends arm or leg to help when being dressed
- Attachment may wax and wane, but still strongly there
9 to 12 Month Language Milestones
May say two-syllable words (ex: ma-ma; da-da)
- Imitates sounds( ex: cough, tongue clicks)
- Understands gestures (ex: bye-bye)
- Babbling gets complex- mixes syllables and “says” long “sentences” varying in pitch
- Average baby understands (not says) 70 words
- Some babies can speak 6 or more words, but majority says no words
9 to 12 Fine Motor Milestones
Pincher grasp- grabbing small items with the thumb and pointer finger (Avg start: 9 months)
- Waves (9-10 months)
- Claps (10 months)
- Bangs toys together (12 months)
- Puts objects in and out of container (12 months)
- Stacks blocks (12 months)
- Releases objects crudely (Avg. start: 12-14 months)
- Controlled release (Avg. start: 18 months)
9 to 12 Months Gross Motor Milestones
- Crawls (Avg. start: 9 months)
- Cruises (Avg. start: 9-10 months)
- Stands alone (Avg. start: 11-12)
- Walks alone (Avg. start: 12-13)
